Banyoles: headquarters of the Olympic Studies Centre of the University of Girona

Banyoles was chosen to be the headquarters of the Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) firstly because it was already the headquarters of the Chair of Sport and Physical Education of the University of Girona, located at the Centre de Tecnificació, and secondly because of the town’s standing in sports such as rowing and canoeing which, along with the associated sporting facilities it offers, make it a popular destination for sports tourism.

Consequently, the Chair of Sport and Physical Education of the University of Girona and the town of Banyoles have been put on the map of OSCs in Spain. It is the third OSC in Catalonia, and its purpose is to work together with the OSC of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Joan Antoni Samaranch OSC of the Barcelona Olympics Foundation in researching Olympism and disseminating knowledge about this field. The OSC of the UAB was founded in 1989 and it was pioneer in the research and dissemination of Olympic and sporting values and ideals. The Joan Antoni Samaranch OSC was founded in 1993. Nationwide there are 32 OSCs and they can be found across the different Autonomous Communities.
