Banyoles: European town of sport 2015

This title, awarded annually by the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES) to up to 18 municipalities with less than 25,000 inhabitants, is conferred on towns that are considered to display the principles of responsibility and ethics in relation to sport. With this accolade the town’s extensive experience in managing international sporting events, and its specialization in sports adapted to people with disabilities, is recognised.

Banyoles, the capital of the county of Pla de l’Estany, is the only Catalan town to have been awarded the title of European Town of Sport 2015 and, together with Palma del Condado in Huelva, is one of just two granted to Spain. Other European towns to have been named this year are Lepoglava in Croatia, Olecko in Poland and Svitavy in the Czech Republic. Nine cities have been named this year in the category of European City of Sport 2015, five of which are Catalan or Spanish: Alcobendas, Alhaurín de la Torre, Badalona, Chiciana de la Frontera and Telde.
