Banyoles and the Pla de l’Estany area is a region small in size (just 267.73 Km2) but with a great sporting tradition extended over the years.

Over 80 sports facilities, here 22 different types of sport are practised, of which there stands out rowing and canoeing, cycling and mountainbiking, team sports (basketball, football and handball), the triathlon and running, among others.

More than 40 agents involved in the sporting field in the region, of which 5 are active and sports tourism companies, 4 are public administrations who provide resources to sport and tourism and 33 are organizations, clubs and sports and active tourism associations.

Over 56 sports events a year, of which over 17 are internationally renowned. Experience in large sporting events, it was a venue for the 1992 Olympic Games, organised the 2004 World Rowing Championship and the 2007 European University Rowing Championship and the 2009 Rowing World Cup, 2011 Banyoles ITU Triathlon Premium European Cup.

The first Mountainbiking Center established by “Turisme de Catalunya” in 1999. It has signposted routes for hiking and mountainbiking.

The first destination certified in Sports Tourism by the Catalan Tourist Agency in 2003. This seal of quality recognises the tourist destination for offering high-quality resources and services aimed at elite, professional, amateur and tourist sportspeople who want to practise sporting activities.

The first Chair of Sport and Physical Education at the University of Girona in 2005, as well as middle and higher level training courses in physical-sporting activities for training and disseminating physical activity and sport.
